Throwing things about

For some months now, [livejournal.com profile] deerfold has been showing up to the Calling with two battery-powered brightly glowing coloured stage balls. Initially I thought he only had two, and felt a little disappointed since if only he'd had three it would have been fun to have a go at juggling them. Then one day he turned up with a red one and a blue one, where previously he'd had red and green; this was perhaps even more frustrating, since now I knew he had three but wasn't bringing them all at once.

Last night he did turn up with all three, so I finally got to have a go, which was very satisfying :-)

It's odd what happens when you start juggling among people you don't know but not in a formal performance context. Usually I juggle among friends, who don't feel any inhibition against saying ‘ooh, cool’ if I do something particularly impressive (but who usually don't, because they've seen me do it all before). I've only ever done actual performance juggling about three times, but in that situation people generally don't hesitate to applaud if they feel so moved. But somewhere in between, there seemed to be some sort of inhibition: a crowd gathered around me, so I must have been doing something reasonably impressive, but almost nobody actually expressed any appreciation. Except for [livejournal.com profile] lupie_stardust, who seemed more fascinated by the glowing balls themselves than what I was doing with them, and for one guy I hadn't seen before who was a juggler too so we went off into a corner and juggling-geeked for a bit.

Of course I hadn't primarily been doing it to impress other people: juggling glowing balls in a darkened room looks at least as pretty to the person doing it as it does to everyone else, so it was still mostly for my own enjoyment. So I can live without a steady stream of attractive women people coming and telling me how fantastic I am, if I have to :-)

And of course if anybody expresses their appreciation they have to say WOW THAT'S REALLY GOOD because there is loud music, and then you say WHAT? and stop juggling so you can lean over to hear them better.

I had been meaning to have you and them in the same place at once, and then when I didn't go to the Calling due to work doom (yet stayed up until 1am reading ok anyway) it happens. Once I didn't go and it turned out somebody I'd been wanting to see for ages, had an enormous crush on and had actually managed to kiss without dying of a nervous breakdown first turned up, and after that she went insane and then moved hundreds of miles away. Maybe the next time I don't go, they will have put a proper ventilation system in and serve cups of tea.

If you don't go to the first one in July, you can miss the first smoke-free Calling...

If I'm out on the 10th I'm bring them again. If I'm not, I'm definitely there on the 24th.

Incidentally, I have had three balls before.

Funny how diferent people have different urges, Simon's is to juggle with the balls, [livejournal.com profile] fiona_kitty's was to stick them up her top...

[livejournal.com profile] libellum does that with mine quite frequently too. Nothing to do with her mental state when we're clubbing, I'm sure.

Once I didn't go and it turned out [it was a mistake not to]

Not going to the Calling does tend to go like that, doesn't it? I think when I didn't bother recently you posted the next morning saying something along the lines of "WOW that was a FANTASTIC Calling" and I thought damn, I missed a good one. (Particularly annoying since the reason I hadn't bothered was that the previous one had been a bit crap.)

(Of course I should count myself lucky my self-esteem isn't low enough for me to have assumed it was a fantastic Calling because I wasn't there :-)

I was very impressed, though I'm not sure that was very clear to you and by the time I tried to applaud I had three silicone balls back in my hands...

Somehow I seem to attract the stream of attractive women purely through the power of my balls, without your impressive juggling skills. And I have the photos to prove it.

If I can get the borked one working again, there's a second blue one if you fancy trying to juggle four things which are just a little bigger than comfortable for the hand.

I have a pretty limited repertoire with four balls, unfortunately; the only really interesting things I can do with them require a higher ceiling at the very least, and would probably be infeasible anyway with those large heavy stage balls. My primary focus as a juggler has always been on whirly hand-waving three-ball work.

Ooooh, shiny. [livejournal.com profile] dennyd has a tendency to do this in clubs. I'm amazed that [livejournal.com profile] deerfold possesses such things without being a juggler himself, though. I mean, I frequently steal Denny's and use them like glowsticks, because I am a SAD GOFF, but I wouldn't buy them merely for that purpose.

Are you free this Sunday? You should come to London and join in the free Circus skills workshop/festival thing!

I'm saying nuffin about how I wave my glowing balls about. I'm not a goth, you understand. I just have a lot of goth friends. Mine also entice pretty people into my soul-stealing camera.

Must actually book a Wednesday off work and go the Calling again.

I must remember "If going to calling, do not go straight to work in London". Arriving at 5am didn't help much either. Security seemed a little surprised to see me. In a hoodie ;)

Have you seen the new Aerotech equipment? 16 million colour LEDs For The Win!

In fact, I'm going to go linky in my journal, they're that shiny.

For one delightful moment I thought I'd heard you say (16 million) (colour LEDs). But (16 million colour) LEDs are still pretty shiny, I'll agree.

It would indeed. Animated swirly patterns all over the balls!
