Circular reasoning

Last month I emailed the city council and requested a black recycling box, because my flat didn't have one when I moved in and I'd got tired of taking stuff to the supermarket bottle bank. They said they'd deliver one, but I heard nothing further from them.

I mailed them back today and asked what had happened. They said they'd definitely left one outside my door, so someone must have walked off with it.

I wondered out loud, in the office, why anyone would bother to steal something you could get free of charge anyway by writing to the council. Someone said that perhaps it was more hassle to do it that way. Well, yes it is actually, because some blighter is stealing the things! But I'm sure that's circular reasoning, somehow. Arrgh.

They said they'd deliver me another one. I hope it stays put this time.

I was expecting them to try to charge you for the second one. I'm glad to see not.

Our wheelie bin went missing. I phoned asking for another. They said we'd have to pay, but there wasn't really another option. Then they got back in touch and said that they'd asked the crew and it had fallen into the truck and been mashed, so we didn't have to pay.

So why didn't they just give us a new one automatically when they trashed the old one? Makes no sense.

The Waste and Refuse boys don't carry bins with them.

It's possible that the paperwork got lost somewhere. And other such excuses. Or simply that they failed to report it, which would be a bit shite, really. :/

Yeah, it took me several goes to get black boxes off them (never got one originally, asked for one, never got it, asked again at a later time, got it, that one got nicked, had to ask twice for a new one).

This is why I don't put it outside, but put the separated out recycling stuff out in bags instead.

In MK they used to get stolen a lot. It was rather hard to get a second new one out of them, because they figured you were just using them for random storage or similar. So people who used them for random storage went out and stole them from other people instead.

Depending on which Ranger you have, they may spray-paint your house number on it.

If *this* one goes missing, I suggest you specifically ask in the e-mail- such niggles make them roll their eyes a little, but they will do it.

Sounds like a good idea. I was already wondering about spraying a number on it myself when it arrived, in fact...

The thief was illiterate.
