A guy has been going round the office today testing the electrical sockets. This requires each employee, in turn, to power down their PC and go and do something else for about ten minutes.

Suddenly I think I've figured out why they installed a pool table in the office kitchen/dining room the other week. It's a perfect way to kill those ten minutes until you can come back and turn your machine back on :-)

“Oi, mate, no need to test that one, it works fine… How do I know? My computer’s plugged into it and switched on, see?”

installed a pool table in the office

OK. Maybe there are advantages to having real offices after all. I don't think I have space for a pool table, at least without commandeering the children's playroom...

On the other hand, you probably don't have a grand piano ten feet from your desk :)

Since my piano playing sucks royally, I don't often find this an inconvenience :-)

The pool table mostly sits there unused, actually. I can only assume that half our employees are too hard-working to want to skive off and play pool, and the other half are too scared to look like slackers, so they sit at their desks and spod in preference to making it obvious that they're not hard at it...

To be blunt, that'd be a bad idea in most companies: I dread to think what the senior academics in this department would look like in swimming costumes...

Important business with the power sockets; they might explode if they don't have a little green sticker on ;-)
