(no subject)

In all my years of writing software, I have never had such rapid and high-quality beta testing as I did with the puzzle collection I mentioned in this diary recently. Evidently writing programs that people can use to waste time is a fantastic way to get a lot of testing very quickly. (Not that that should have surprised me, in retrospect, but.)

As a result I've now decided the beta period is over. There will still be bugs to fix, and I'll continue development as and when I have the time and energy, but I reckon these games now work plausibly enough to open them to world scrutiny. So in the unlikely event that anyone who read my previous entry on the subject was absolutely dying to link to my puzzles page and scrupulously didn't do so, they should now feel free :-)

Also, I've just added a fifth game to the page. If you're bored of the other four, go and play Rectangles for a while…

Is it possible to make it so that the Rectangles game will have a slightly wider area you can click on for it to think you have clicked on an edge? I keep not being able to undo them again. (I know zip about making computers do this sort of thing as yet, so if this sounds like an absolutely daft request I do apologise.)

Feedback.

Highlight the edge that would be clicked on if the user clicked, as the mouse hovers. If it wouldn't count as an edge by the click filter, don't.

Well, the control/feedback mechanism doesn't *have* to be identical on all platforms surely?

You could also subtly shade active areas so they're visually distinct (without interfering with the larger distinctions on the board.)

Surely the Right Thing is for the sensitive area for each edge to be a square at 45˚ centred on the middle of the edge?

That might have been it. Try it and see.

Oh, that's definitely better. Much easier to use.

And I love the way it now does a little flash when you complete the puzzle!

You don’t know me. I’m ky’s old friend. I don’t normally bug people I don’t know but I’m a bit stuck. (computerwise and thought you might be able to help)

I’m trying to delete most of my private files/ folders/ etc... because I got a laptop and selling my old computer and I’m now stuck with no idea what to do to get rid of something.

The main problem is, well I don't know the name of it but I’ll try to describe it. When you are on the net "like" on a search engine and you type in a few letters it will show all previous searches on a list box to try to make it easier but now I wish for it to "stop" and can’t find out where/ how to do it.

Any help would be great!

To be sure, you basically need to wipe the disk and (assuming you're selling it as blank but with Windows installed) reinstall the OS.

If you don't know exactly what you're doing and don't want stray personal details left on the thing, then the best bet here would be to find a local Linux geek and ask them personally to (and I quote) use a Linux boot disk to "dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hda" to wipe the disk, then reinstall Windows using whatever CDs you got with the machine. Make sure you've moved anything you *do* want to keep off before this though; only the military get to recover data after that sort of destruction!

Thanks, but I didn't want to be that harsh. I just wanted to know an easy way to destroy those hidden files without messing up the machine. (as most programs I have no CDs, or access to them anymore)

I don't think I'll be able to wipe the disk, if I wanted or not.

Do: Internet Explorer -> Tools Menu -> Options ... -> Content tab -> Autocomplete settings button.

That should give you "Clear forms" and "Clear passwords" buttons, which should solve the previous search problem. There's also a "Clear history" button somewhere near there which should help.

If you can do a full wipe and reinstall of the old computer, then do so. It's much easier and you KNOW you've found everything then.

Thanks! That's done it.

Slightly odd place to put this, but hey, it seems almost vaguely relevant-ish...

Me mum told me about this at the weekend (to my complete surprise); it seems like a bit of fun:
