I really hate it when I look at someone and think, perfectly genuinely, something which I then realise is totally a chat-up line.

At the Calling tonight there was a girl who I kept looking at and wondering ‘now who does she remind me of?’. But, of course, if I'd gone up to her and asked ‘Excuse me, do I know you? I'm sure I recognise you from somewhere’, that would have been approximately the oldest chat-up line in the book, and I'd have had a very small chance of actually finding out what I wanted to know, compared to either getting slapped or (I suppose) accidentally pulling her :-)

Fortunately, I figured it out in the end and didn't have to bother her about it. Phew.

You could always try "I know this sounds like a chat-up line and I don't mean it to be, but". Of course sometimes that can just sound like a cheap get-out ...

Trouble is, that itself can be a chat-up line (and in fact one person who I had this rant at last night turned out to have successfully used it!).

In any case, as it turned out she wasn't the person she reminded me of, and in all probability wouldn't even have known her, so even asking her wouldn't have been helpful :-)

I don't think you're likely to actually get slapped for blatant use of cheesy chat-up lines... although a suitably haughty sneer can often be nearly as painful :)

you are forgetting that the majority of women *like* being blatantly chatted up! quite independently of whether they fancy you; it is unfallibly flattering. so i would go for it next time.

In that case I declare myself a vocal minority.

I have an observation that I've noticed applies to quite a few women but that sounds so like a chat-up line that I'm unwilling to tell anyone it until the point where questions of chat-up lines have become largely academic. (And I've got used to thinking of it as private and intimate so I'm not going to say what it is here l-)

Isn't this traditionally the point at which you post its MD5? ;-)

(Not sure what for, in this case; I suppose it might theoretically enable any woman you'd said it to to know what you were talking about...)
