Whew. Well, at least now I'm home, if not with as many cars as I left with this morning.

The breakdown guy had a portable jump-start power pack which seemed to do a much better job than my colleague's attempt, and got poor old Arthur started with no difficulty. What to do next was the problem, since I needed a new battery and nowhere that would sell me one was still open; I could have driven home and sorted it all out tomorrow, but that would have meant calling someone out again to get the car to a purveyor of batteries, and that would have been far more expensive since my hastily-reinstated breakdown cover doesn't cover me when I'm actually at home (never quite worked that one out).

Eventually we drove the car round to the garage where I usually get it serviced (or rather, said garage's new premises, which aren't where they were last time I went there), found an all-night security officer, and my breakdown guy persuaded him to open the gate so we could put the car inside the compound where it might be halfway safe overnight. So tomorrow I have to ring the garage and explain that my car needs fixing: ‘Certainly, sir, just bring it round and we'll – ’ ‘Um, actually, you've already got it.’ Which should be good for a few laughs, for values of ‘laugh’ which are probably closer to ‘annoying bureaucratic obstacle caused by not doing things the expected way’.

Now I'm back at home, but unfortunately I have no food because I'd planned to hit Sainsburys on my way home. I think a takeaway pizza is very much in order, followed by intensive sofa therapy. *flop*

They'll probably demand that you drive it out, then drive it back in again before they'll fix it.

Is it clear that you need a new battery - that you hadn't just left the lights on or something, and just driving around a bit wouldn't have charged it up okay? Or could the alternator instead of the battery died? Anyhow, good luck - I'm glad you're home and that the car's somewhere where it can be sorted out. (-:

My car has a ridiculously large battery (in terms of starting a car, it's 875 cold cranking amps). Maybe it'd cost a lot to replace like for like.

I definitely didn't leave the lights on - that was the very first thing I checked and double-checked as soon as I found it wouldn't start. The breakdown guy checked for other obvious electrical drains (such as the boot light having jammed on, which apparently happens!) but couldn't see any, so he concluded that the battery itself had failed rather than merely being drained. His theory was that it had developed an internal short circuit, which he says can happen without warning if you're unlucky.

Oooh, the spontaneous internal short circuit sounds nasty. I hope it can't blow up or anything if that happens! It's already sufficiently exciting when one hooks up jump-starting leads the wrong way around.

but that would have meant calling someone out again to get the car to a purveyor of batteries

Or calling somebody who doesn't mind nipping to Halfords or Discount Autoparts to buy you a battery which they can then bring to your car. :-)

No use now, I know, but for future reference:

a) I have a battery-charger
b) I have a car (well, mostly)
c) I'm often working from home these days.

Oh, and d) I seem to have a spare battery, but it needs charged, so it's not much use at the moment. It also needs refilled with distilled water which I don't have any of, so it's not actually chargeable either at the moment. So it's not much help really. Hm.

There's actually a battery place on Histon Road within walking distance of me, so if I'd trusted myself to fit a new battery I could just have driven home and then walked there this morning. I very nearly did try that, in fact, but the breakdown guy looked dubious when it was suggested (perhaps he'd osmosed my near-total luserhood with cars) and that resolved my indecision in the other direction.

Thanks for the offer of the battery charger, too (and in fact it did occur to me yesterday that you had one - now who says LJ is useless? :-) but according to the breakdown guy, it's likely that my battery has developed an internal short circuit, so if I'd tried recharging it it would have drained itself as fast as I could do so.
