… and I won't know for sure until tomorrow.
In this diary on the 18th of January, I mentioned having managed to shrink one of my remaining two nice jumpers: I'd remembered to rescue one from the wash before shoving everything else into the tumble dryer, but I'd forgotten that I'd put both into that wash so the other one went unrescued.
Today I have done a serious quantity of laundry. Among this laundry was the remaining nice jumper; and accordingly, after the wash cycle finished, I found the nice jumper and pulled it out of the load before the rest went into the dryer. On went the dryer; an hour and a half later off I went to sort the dry clothes out and put them away… and imagine my horror when I found a nice jumper in the tumble-dried pile.
I'd worn the shrunken jumper (I now recall) a couple of weeks ago, when I went into town to get a haircut. (I always like to wear expendable clothes to the barber's, because they get completely covered in little bits of hair.) I'd got home, taken it off, slung it into the laundry bag and forgotten about it, reasoning that it wouldn't matter if I tumble-dried it by mistake because it was already too small.
So there is now a one in two chance that the jumper I rescued from the dryer tonight was the wrong one, and that I've just shrunk my only remaining nice jumper. It's difficult to tell by measuring them against one another; I won't know until the wet one has dried and I can try it on.
Next time I go clothes shopping, I will move heaven and earth to find some sort of nice thin-jumper sort of garment which I can tumble-dry, because I am utterly sick and tired of making this sort of mistake. Any useful hints and tips appreciated.
