Aha! Got you, you irritating phenomenon.

Everyone who wears glasses will know the feeling where you suddenly realise the world in front of you is rather more blurred than it needs to be, and you take your glasses off and clean them and your eyesight has improved by an order of magnitude when you put them back on.

Recently - over the past few weeks - I've been finding I'm doing that more than average. A lot more than average. Practically every morning, at least on weekdays. There always seems to be a load of opaque gunk over one lens. I've wondered why, but only idly, and then I just slid glasses-cleaning into my morning routine alongside brushing my teeth and thought no more about it.

Yesterday evening, in that half-asleep state where concepts slide back and forth and try connecting to each other in outlandish ways, I suddenly had an insight, and an experiment overnight has confirmed it. The reason my glasses always have gunk on them in the morning is because the case I store them in overnight is grubby. Jackpot!

Now all I need to do is get a new one. I wonder where you can buy those. I'm pretty sure mine came with the glasses themselves...

Opticians do them, and so does Boots. Though I suppose Boots contains an optician's, so I perhaps ought to say 'opticians, including Boots, do them'. Though I have a feeling they're not only in the optician bit of Boots

(Can that apostrophe arrangement possibly be correct?)

Um.

I'll shut up now.

I would probably know this myself if I'd got round to going to an optician at any point in the last five years :-) Thanks.

Wow, you store your glasses overnight in a case? How organized and tidy! I just leave them on the table next to the bed, unless I'm particularly drunk, in which case I have to hunt for them the next morning, without the benefit of them, IYSWIM.

Oddly enough, I store them in a case because if I just leave them on the bedside table then I tend to reach out in the middle of the night for (say) a glass of water, hit them by mistake, and get grubby fingermarks all over them. So it's done in the cause of not having to clean them too often. I can't win :-)

I'd be more worried about knocking a glass of water over!

Mostly I don't worry too much about getting mine grubby as it only takes 30 secs or so to polish on a tshirt. But then I can live without mine if I have to, which might make my attitude to them different.

As a kid I used to jsut live with them dirty ;-)
