Things that make me smile

I popped into town just now to talk to my bank. Outside the bank was one of those ‘living statue’ performers – painted silver and with a pedestal to stand on.

I've seen plenty of those around before, of course, and they normally do nothing for me. But this one did – because he was off his pedestal, taking a break, and chatting to a passer-by while one silver-painted hand rootled enthusiastically in a bag of crisps.

The idea that statues need to take a snack break now and then really made me smile. Probably even Nelson comes down off his column every week or so, late at night, and goes looking for a kebab van.

I have a lovely photo somewhere of two living statues having a chat and a fag break :-)

In London, I once saw a living statue use a cashpoint.

He'd painted his ATM card silver.

Did he get his money in 50p pieces?

If this was true, I would so do that. Bus drivers would be much better hydrated if they didn't tut at people without any coins so often.

I was recounting a Cambridge Bus Driver Adventure story to someone else, and they asked why the driver wasn't given a float at the start of the day, and I had to say I had no idea. It seems Stagecoach has several options:

* Issue reasonable floats to drivers
* Publicly post fares at bus stops, on timetables, or on the internet
* Train bus drivers that sometimes someone won't have exact change and in that case the driver should let them ride free
* Train bus drivers that sometimes someone won't have exact change and in that case the driver should apologise, but say they can't get on
* Train bus drivers that sometimes someone won't have exact change and in that case the driver should suggest they buy a megarider
* Accept exact change only in the first place

But no. It seems they aim for the well-meaning but badly-executed compromise of _just hoping_ that it'll "just work" if they don't do anything at all, and this often works, but leads to people just staring blankly all the time.

Both sides?

I only noticed the top side. It would probably be possible to paint the other side as well, if the paint were magnetically inert, though.
