Nice story! I'm sure the DailyWTF would appreciate it too, if you're that way inclined.

This is far too plausible.

I managed a 3,000-fold speed improvement two years ago, through a judicious combination of more efficient I/O and an algorithm with better efficiency order.

Fortunately, I was allowed to ship that because the previous effort had transcended far-too-embarrassing and moved into mistaken-for-a-crash. (-8
