Indeed; the Shut Up button should be tiny, hard to see, and require good hand-eye coordination to press. It should also perhaps flit around the screen so you have to catch it, and/or pop up a confirmation dialog when you do, optionally with a captcha like this one (http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2174/2268237733_cda4a1dbb3.jpg?v=0).

What a silly question. The answer is zero!

I am wondering whether to make SNOOZE huge and SHUT UP small, or whether I should actually go further and make SNOOZE the only button available while the alarm is actually sounding – if you want to turn the alarm off you have to do it by pressing a second button once you're in snooze mode.

doesn't that lead to you hitting snooze repeatedly, realising you have to leave in five minutes, and sprinting out of the house without ever remembering to turn the alarm /off/?

(I rather think the snooze on my phone gives up on me if I ignore it for about an hour).

I'd suggest a two-second delay after hitting SNOOZE before SHUT UP becomes enabled, to avoid accidental double-tap woes. Or insist that SHUT UP is held down for a full second or something.
