Music in the home
[Poll #1195109]

Pedant points:

  • Use common sense as necessary for borderline or ambiguous cases
  • Use your own judgment as to what reasonably counts as ‘often’
  • By ‘music-playing equipment’ I mean equipment for playing recorded music; musical instruments are outside the scope of this poll
  • Devices which can play music but are not specifically intended for so doing (e.g. a computer that just happens to have a sound card) should be considered music-playing devices if you ever play music on them; otherwise make your own judgment.

I have a portable stereo system in my kitchen which has not been moved for the last five years or so. Does that count?

The room containing my computer fulfills the functions of a living room, dining room and computer room. Sould I choose all three options?

Should I include primarily spoken work radio stations (e.g. radio 4) under the category of 'music'?

Portable stereo system used as nonportable: make your own judgment. If it were me, I think I would count it as nonportable if it's intended to be left there permanently, but as portable if it's intended to be used wherever I see fit and it just so happens that that's always the same place.

Yes, choose all three options, push the boat out. Or perhaps choose all three options for the first question, but for the second question distinguish depending on which function it is typically fulfilling at the time when you have music playing? Make your best judgment.

I wouldn't count spoken word as music, but again make your own judgment: if you don't particularly mind whether it's spoken word or music, for instance, it would seem legitimate to decide that it counted.

My living room/dining room/kitchen is all one room :-)

The study is also sort of the library and the music room (for the musical instruments which are outside the scope of your poll) and the guest bedroom, but since those weren't on your list I only had to tick one box.

I got rid of the stereo in the bedroom because we weren't using it. We don't use the living room one much either, but it can stay for parties and similar. We do use the computers to play music in the study though.

Our non-portable music-playing devices are not portable because they are plugged into the mains and do not contain batteries. In other circumstances they can be portable.

Our living room and dining room are the same room.

Err, we have a room that is really 'largely unused spare storage room' but which I grandly like to term my library. It has the vinal player in it, because M terms that to be an inconvenient thing that needs storing. It's kind-of open plan with the kitchen, so provides all my kitchen music needs.

What about radios?

I'd certainly count a radio as a music-playing device, although if you hardly ever use it for anything but the spoken word you might reasonably not do so.

It occurs to me that my emphasis on recorded music could be read as ruling out radio programmes broadcast in real time from live concerts, which was not my intention. I would certainly classify any music coming out of a radio as within the scope of the poll.

I counted my car on a technicality, because I can't carry it, making it
non-portable, and I park on the drive and sometimes listen to the end of
something on the radio when I get home :)

I have a computer upstairs in the study which is often used to play music locally. It also hosts a SqueezeServer and streams music wirelessly on request to the SqueezeBox in the family room (== living room, although we don't call it that).

In general if I'm anywhere other than in the study or family room and want music, I set it up to play in the family room and then just turn the volume up :-) I can then listen in the kitchen, dining room, and our bedroom (which is above the family room).

It's a detached house and I have checked that when you are outside, you can barely hear the music emanating from inside even when I have it cranked up :-)

I missed the "none" option :)

We used to have a stereo in the living room but it got old and decrepit and we sold it a while ago.

My wife occasionally listens to music on her PC (in the living room) but I didn't count her usage.

(For some strange reason, I nearly never listen to music. It's not that I don't like it, but more that I don't need it, or something. I put on music maybe once every two months or so.)
