Long vehicle

On Saturday night, I saw a long limousine parked by the roadside, with a bunch of teenagers milling around outside it. I assume it had either just taken them to a party or was just about to.

Parked behind that was a second long vehicle, of a type I hadn't encountered before. It was to a limousine as an SUV is to a normal car: taller, rugged-looking design, big wheels, intimidating front grille, but still a long vehicle. A Sports Utility Limo.

I suppose, thinking about it, there are one or two practical advantages to the design over a normal limo; for instance, it might be easier to move about inside it with a bit more headroom.

However, I was a little disturbed nonetheless by the concept of an SUV limo, and in particular I can't help thinking that what the world really needs is for Jeremy Clarkson to take one off-road and laugh at its performance :-)

Why not e-mail them and suggest it? They're probably crazy enough to give it a go.

I seem to remember Top Gear putting a Daimler DS420 hearse around Silverstone many years ago: once you get the 4.2-litre straight six above a stately burble those things can really shift!

Thirded; that should definitely be good for a laugh.

I saw a stretch - oh, whassit called, that one that looks like an APC? A hummer! I saw a stretch hummer when I was in the US a couple of years ago. Freaky thing.

Yeah, we saw one of those in Bath on Saturday. It was bright pink.

A pink one! Oh, man, I'd have loved to see that. What a wonderful combination of attributes...

I saw the inside of a stretch hummer. It had a small nightclub in there.

I see the damn things in London quite frequently. They're a nuisance, as you'd expect from a combination of two types of vehicle each of which is, itself, a nuisance.

Around our way there is a stretch limo (white), a stretch limo (pink) and a stretch hummer.

We have steep hills, narrow roads and tight bends.

They do not go well together.

Conspicuous consumption need only be conspicuous.

I had no idea they were still so uncommon in the UK as to be interesting! We have all kinds of stretch SUVs over here, especially stretch Hummers, but other car makers seem to make stretch versions too. I think, as you suggested, the logic is that in a taller car it's easier to move around and thus make good use of the extra space the 'stretch' affords you. Of course, it could just be because for some reason people think they look cool...

I saw a double stretch limo in Vegas - it was about as long as a really long lorry, and only about 6 feet tall (or whatever a normal car height is). Very weird looking.

Hummers are considered SUVs now? Eek!

What next, the Scania R620 compact sedan?

Well, only because they'd have trouble with drivers' licences if they classified them as tanks.

What would a Hummer be considerd in the UK if not an SUV? (NB the Subaru Outback is considered a small car here).
