Random stuff

I got an early birthday card through my door yesterday. Well, a card prominently mentioning my birthday, at least. All right, it had ‘OFFICIAL POLL CARD’ written on it.

So there's a local election on my birthday this year. I fear this might lead to a substantial risk of me accidentally turning in a ballot paper on which I've written ‘Arrgh, I've just turned thirty, how on earth do you expect me to have any idea who to vote for under those circumstances?’.

Today I've had spam suggesting a link exchange between my website and some hair styling websites. The odd thing is that they bill themselves as ‘white hat sites’. I'm not sure that description would give me confidence in a hairdresser in particular; it suggests that I might get a haircut so bad I had to wear a white hat to cover it! (Though, I suppose, a white-hat hairdresser is probably an improvement on a black-hat hairdresser, since the latter must be someone who maliciously shaves your hair off while you're passed out at a party.)

Finally, it occurred to me last night that manual dexterity is of course the skill required when you throw the book at someone.

What *did* they mean by white hat hairdressing? Was it complete spam, or to you?

I don't have the least idea what they meant! They didn't go into details at all.

I can only assume it was totally undirected spam; it's pretty difficult to imagine any relevance whatsoever between PuTTY and hair styling, and there were no personalising touches to the email that indicated they had any idea who they were talking to or what sort of site they were requesting links from.

(It was sent to the PuTTY contact address rather than my personal one. If it had gone to my personal address I might at least have entertained myself with the thought that they might have seen my photo and been hinting that I could do with better hairstyling myself :-)

Ah, I thought maybe it was clear from context. But it puzzled me, I couldn't imagine if they wanted: gullible people to link to them; gullible people to reply to the email; real people to link to them; or what. Offering a link exchange doesn't seem to forward *any* agenda most, and I couldn't work why someone sent it.

Was there an image you mail reader automatically stripped out? Then I guess anything plausible enough to get past your pet Bayes would be reasonable.

*shrug* Any or all of those, I'd guess. Perhaps the spam was intended to operate as both an address harvester and a link generator. Who knows? I've given up trying to see into the minds of spammers, for the most part...

Was there an image your mail reader automatically stripped out?

No, none of my mail software does that. It can reject messages it doesn't like the look of, but any message it does present to me is presented unmodified. There were no images.

Ooh happy birthday! *hug* Are you doing anything for it?

I think I might have my 21st again this year. I don't like the thought of being 30 :)

I don't know yet. I'll think about it nearer the time.

(Then again, that might turn out to be code for "I'll dither until it's too late and do nothing by default". :-)

Well you havent got that long to faff... either that or my sense of time is being compressed by the fact that I haven't done any of the garden stuff I was supposed to do in March...

...which is what I ended up doing for my 30th, and then again for my 32nd (my most recent "ooh, big round number, might actually get around to doing something proper").

It's not that bad, at least as far as I can remember...

Far indeed :P IIRC, you spent a goodly portion of the occasion itself imbibing a volume of alcohol sufficient to make very sure you'd remember as little of it as possible...

I don't alas have that option, being off the sauce thanks to IBS *and* medication. Shame, it does seem like a sterling idea...
