You should definitely consider putting Rockbox on the iPod. This will give you Ogg support. However, I've been inactive in Rockbox for a bit and I don't know if anyone's bothered to get round to making the line out on the dock connector work yet.

Caveat: Only if the current 60gb models still use the portalplayer chip.
