Just came off in me 'and, guv

In a perfectly appropriate end to yesterday's catalogue of errors, I went to my bedroom chest of drawers last night to get out a pyjama top, and the front panel of the drawer came off in my hand. So this morning I slathered it in Araldite, hit it a couple of times with a mallet and left two heavy rocks on top of it, and with any luck by the time I get home this evening it'll be willing to cooperate for fear of more such treatment.

Also last night I went to the pub and drank beer, which is the first time I've touched alcohol in nearly two weeks. I didn't find drunkenness as enjoyable as I used to, and the (very mild) headache this morning leaves me thinking it wasn't worth the effort. Perhaps I'll continue not drinking, or barely drinking, for a while longer after all; enjoyment versus health is a debate that can go either way, but if I don't even enjoy it there's clearly no point in drinking the stuff.

I dunno. I find there are sometimes occasions when the obvious social 'right' thing would be to have a beer, and it's kind of awkward that I don't actually like the stuff.

Yes, that's what I found. Once you start not drinking, it's rather difficult to stop...

... which seems like a very strange way round for it to work!

I'm reminded of the Paul Merton sketch about someone trying really hard to start smoking. "Sometimes I don't smoke as many as 20 cigarettes a day. Often I'll not smoke a cigarette, and then immediately not smoke another one. I've tried starting suddenly, cutting up..."

Did he try nicotine patches? That would actually make sense.

I thought I was the only person in the country who kept resolving to drink more, and failing to do so.

Yes, I'm currently quite tempted to do the same. Or at least not to bother drinking on anything other than 'special' occasions.

Was it just me wondering why you covered your hand in glue and then thumped it?

Funnily enough, I do have some lingering bits of Araldite on a couple of my fingers...

The novelty of drinking has kind of worn off for me; still, at least these days I'm an utter lightweight so it only takes a couple of drinks to induce drunkenness. Useful when you're still technically a skint student. ;)

The entry on my friends page after yours starts, Considering how drunk I got last night …

Mmm, I hardly drink at all now. I plan to keep some alcohol around and to drink it over time, but there's a definite steady decline in my alcohol consumption. It must be weeks now since I had any at all. Though, it helps that I have to drive a lot, so that makes me keep clear of it at various social occasions.

I barely drink at all because my innards won't take it, and I find I enjoy it far less when I do drink; the less I drink the worse hangovers seem to become. Plus, as with a lot of things, many alcoholic drinks aren't actually thatnnice when you take them as beverages to be savoured, rather than as ways of getting alcohol into your bloodstream..
