But yes, alternating colours would make life easier and I will switch to that in future.
A more "natural" order might be DHSC, i.e. arranging them in order of (apologies - correct geometrical terms flee my brain) number of angles which point inwards. ♦ ♥ ♠ ♣ (may not display correctly on all systems - I can't see the diamond on mine)
"Re-entrant", perhaps? I was told once that's an architectural term for an inward-pointing angle (its opposite is "salient"). I don't know of a geometric term for it.
Isn't it just concave? As opposed to say the huge exciting covnex hulls of linear programming.
FWIW, my order was the same but for slightly different reasons. Order by colour first (aren't people supposed to pick out red things first?), followed by simplicity of shape (in some sense). I wasn't particularly good at bridge.
That's it, thank you. It is on plenty of maths web sites now I know what to look for, as well as architectural sites.
When I look at the suits in terms of number of re-entrant angles, I see there is something missing, and I think I know what it is... (http://bugshaw.livejournal.com/70094.html)
The fiends! How did they keep this from us for so long?
