The annoyances of being ill

I barely slept at all last night due to a strange feverish feeling, so this morning I not only feel strange and feverish but am also three-quarters asleep. I keep deciding which room of my flat I want to go into, and then walking into a different one by mistake. I therefore decided going to work would be bound to do more harm than good, and hence didn't.

My current preference for passing a sick day would be to spend a fair amount of it playing NetHack. Today, even that is denied me, because my current NH saved game is looking really quite promising and I don't want to blow it by playing like a pudding while groggy. So I suppose it's the sofa for me. Oh well.

Play on a different machine. Eg: mine via vpn, or assorted others ;) That way you can still play and it doesn't matter if you're a snoozebaboon.

That's a point, I suppose. [livejournal.com profile] ceb is always on at me to play on chiark, come to think of it.

Mind you, suppose it starts going well by accident? [livejournal.com profile] damerell apparently had this unexpectedly happen to him once, and it terminated in ascension. That wouldn't be so bad in itself, but if a second game starts getting good then I'll have to start trying to remember which things I've got in what; the second guy is liable to die to a giant eel because I've forgotten that it's the first who has a ring of free action, or some such. It's probably better if I lay off until I can resume my current game, and don't confuse myself by trying to have two on the go at once...

Alternatively, play under a different name using nethack -u Ill-Simon.

Ooh, I didn't know you could do that. That's worth knowing for the future, although I think most of my response to Verity still applies in this particular situation.

I wouldn't[1] have known how to do that, but it seems inevitable that one *could* do it[2].

Suggestion: are there silly variants of nethack that would be fun but sufficiently different not to be confused? You know, nethack -everymonsterisalion or one of the complete the game collecting everything things?

[1] Indeed, still don't, I didn't bother remembering the letter.
[2] At this point I realised what it must be :)

There's got to be a polymorph joke in there somewhere...

I empathise more than is reasonable with repeatedly going in to the wrong rooms by mistake.
