This is why I think capitalism is broken. I think PuTTY should be paying you enough that you can spend your time doing useful things like, ahem, sudoku progs. Has it got a voluntary donations button?
I know the feeling, I've thought that. But then I can't think of a system that would be good. The government could fund useful projects. But beaurocracies can really suck at deciding what is. They could fund everyone (equivalently to a society where we work, say, 32h/wk), but most people would do something useless.
The closest thing to it appears to be a FAQ entry (http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/faq.html#faq-donations) which says, essentially, "No, we're not soliciting money. Go buy yourself something nice instead. Only if you really fell you must shove some cash at us, you can use PayPal or e-gold to do so. But really, you shouldn't."
Well, not quite as strongly as that (more "you needn't feel pressured to do so" than "you shouldn't"), but I found it vaguely off-putting the first time I came across it.
