thank you very much for your helpful advice! we figured out today that it's actually a primary school, so it doesn't seem so bad. also i noticed that the road is wide enough for two lanes of parked cars and two lanes of moving traffic, so it should be able to cope with whatever the school throws at it.
i'm not sure i'd be heading towards carlton way very often, but the warning is noted. i find that the only thing i hear from one of my neighbours is football noises. my parents were here once, and were annoyed that the neighbours were watching on analog and we were on cable, and we had a time delay of a second or two... so they could hear the shouts through the wall just before they saw the goal occur, which was quite a surreal experience!
