Crash

I had a car accident on the way home from work this evening. Pulled up at a roundabout and the car behind me didn't stop. Bang, rear-end shunt.

Fortunately a Highways Agency vehicle happened to pass by a minute or two later, and took charge smoothly. The other driver and I were both totally calm, but also totally dithering because we didn't really know what to do next. We knew we had to exchange details, but neither of us was quite sure what else if anything had to be done.

I think I'm personally OK, though I'll go to a doctor tomorrow to make sure. I'm less convinced that my car will recover…

I'm glad you're OK. You have to tell your insurer; I don't think you need to tell the police, but it's fine to do so. Ah, the AA have advice.

At least it sounds as though it should be pretty simple insurance-wise. Since it's a collision with a stationary vehicle, the other person's insurance company is liable to simply treat it as "not worth fighting over - we're paying", so it ought to get sorted out quite quickly. (They seem to share a pretty fixed set of rules for these things - not entirely surprising, since lawyers cost more money than most claims.)

The other rule which nobody has mentioned is sit down and have a cup of tea. I'm sure it's not too late for this now 8-) Calm-and-dithery can morph into adrenaline-shivers alarmingly fast.

Ach, that sucks. Glad you're OK. I had a rear-shunt a few years ago that took ages to sort out, and then when it was finally all done, I had another one a couple of months later. They're a pain but at least it's all the other guy's fault and it'll get sorted eventually.

That happened to me a few years back - car backed into me at a roundabout. I seem to remember that you have to inform your insurer even if the other person admits responsibility. I don't remember doing anything else!
