This week I have mostly been sleepy.
My body clock seems to have thought it was next weekend (when I will start a four-week holiday and can safely start to get out of the habit of waking up at 8am) when it was really last weekend (when I didn't, and couldn't). Therefore, I had excellent lie-ins on Saturday and Sunday, and when I was rudely awoken by Monday's alarm I really could have done with another two hours. So I was thoroughly knackered on Monday night, and left post-pizza earlier than usual to sleep. Sadly I didn't even manage that competently, and instead had a night of disturbed sleep and weird dreams. Hence, still sleepy today. Hope this sorts itself out soon or I'm going to get cross.
Chatting to Mary this morning, it suddenly occurred to me why my dreams are more coherent when I'm not sleeping well: it's because when I'm closer to being awake, the reasoning part of my brain that can construct semi-plausible plots is closer to full functioning. So naturally my dreams read rather less like something thought up by someone who was fast asleep.
The bit I remember of last night's dreams had a rather neat premise (for a dream): an alien race who could not merely survive large amounts of electric current passing through their bodies, but could harness it to do useful work. Therefore, they landed on Earth and deliberately committed capital crimes in the USA in order to be put in the electric chair, because that way the human race would willingly donate them free electricity! Sadly I woke up before finding out what they were going to use it for, which was a bit of a disappointment...
