Geometric progression

This morning I spent approximately £20 on new-house-related stuff. Yesterday I spent something in the region of £200, and the day before that I spent about £2000 (mostly on white goods and furniture).

The progression stops there, because the day before that I bought the house itself, which (regrettably) cost me really quite a lot more than £20,000.

But tomorrow I might at least try to think of something house-useful I can buy for about £2, although 20p the day after is probably infeasible, and 2p the day after that is certainly silly.

I don't think they qualify as useful, unless I use them to prop up a wobbly table leg or something :-)

You could buy one (1p) and a nail (1p, she says, guessing wildly, or maybe you already have one) and nail it to the wall as a conversation piece.

A couple of cable ties? They always come in handy....

AFAIK they sell penny sweets, but they cost more than a penny. But I haven't looked for years, I *hope* there's something you can buy for a penny, but I don't know.

Of course, some things are sold by weight, so you could buy a 1/3 of a sweet or ten resistors, or 1/30 of a banana...

What costs £20,000? A rather expensive car; a conservatory; a swimming pool and hot tub; an electromagnetic objective lens. Argh, I have forgotten to break the microscope and steal Simon's money to pay for it!

On the other hand, about that swimming pool and hot tub...you were going to have a housewarming party, right?

20p will buy a bog-standard cartridge fuse, which could come in handy. 2p… um… a tap washer? Though in fact you'd have trouble getting one for less than 5p these days, it seems.
