Everybody in the building was just summoned to a meeting, ostensibly to discuss the quarterly results. When we actually got there, it turned out that this was a transparent fiction and the real purpose was to give a leaving present to one of those behind-the-scenes organiser types without whom any company would fall apart in short order. Presumably lying about the purpose of the meeting was in order to make the presentation a surprise.

This is all very well and rather sweet, but the guy who sits next to me calculates that using up 10 minutes of time from each of 300 employees comes to 50 man-hours - well over a week's work. If I were so beloved by my company that they were willing to spend 50 man-hours on doing something nice for me when I left, I think I'd prefer to just get the extra week's holiday!

Actually it depends whether the work at your company is task orientated or not.

A person with a task to finish would most likely stay an extra 10 minutes to finish it one day rather than another, or leave early if he finished it 10 minutes before the end of the day.

Therefore individual 10 minutes cannot simply be added up to get 50 man hours.

Is poorly informed speculation allowed? Consider the morale effect of letting someone well-liked go without a proper send-off. (At least two people at Notconnect said they thought I'd been badly treated when I left there... Zeus did a much better job of saying goodbye even when they made people redundant.)
