*blinks* I don't think I thought of offensiveness at any point. I wanted to say that the boots were off-puttingly expensive, but at the same time I also wanted to say that they were in a style which would probably go better with expensive smart trousers than with (say) jeans, and thus I'd expect them to be bought by people who were generally willing to spend a lot on their clothes. Implying that lot in a few words is hard to do well, so I had to try a few times before I got roughly the right tone. That's all really.

(Now I'm curious to know what "more offensive" thought you had in mind!)
