There can't be many things more infuriating than being beaten at Scrabble by one point.
This happened to me on Tuesday, when Prue at work complained about a Linux box that needed fixing, and I volunteered to go round and help her with it in return for her cooking me dinner. After I took one look at the machine and said it needed more hardware, and after we ate dinner, she and I and her housemate played Scrabble, and she finished first with me a single point behind. If I'd been twenty or thirty points behind I'd have shrugged and accepted that I was outclassed, but one point is pretty annoying.
But unfortunately, there are things more annoying than that. Last night, I went round there again since she'd got the necessary extra hardware; and this time the Linux box is fixed good and proper. I was only too happy to play Scrabble again in the hope of revenge … and this time she won by two points. Arrrgh.
